Recently we had a frustrated client who wanted to sync his contacts with Gmail from his HTC Incredible Android phone. Bafflingly, HTC’s Sense UI (which is in most ways superb) had no obvious means to facilitate this transfer, in spite of the fact that the device runs Google’s mobile operating system. After some futzing (that’s the technical term!) with the device, we were able to discover a very simple workaround following Google’s own instructions for establishing an iPhone connection with Google Sync using the MS Exchange account type. Here for your perusal are those simple steps.
1. In your settings app, press “Add New Account.”
2. Choose “Microsoft Exchange” as the Account type.
3. Enter your full Gmail address in the email address field.
4. Enter your Gmail password.
5. Tap Next and wait for the next screen.
6. In the Server Name field, type “m.google.com”.
7. Choose the services you want to sync (Calendar, Contacts and Mail are all possible, and it’s A-OK to turn off mail and calendar if you have specified a Gmail account to be a shared repository of contacts, for example.)
8. Tap Finished.
9. On the Accounts screen, tap “Sync Now” to start the process and you’re all set!
